Suits
The centre of everything the workroom does, and the only garment we draft a pattern for from nothing.
A suit is the reason most people find their way here, and it is the garment the whole workroom is arranged around. Everything else we do — the alterations, the restorations, the wardrobe work — is in some sense a consequence of knowing how a suit is built.
What bespoke actually means
The word originated on Savile Row and means to be spoken for: a garment claimed by one person before it exists. It begins as a paper pattern drafted for one body and no other, rather than a stock block adjusted at the edges. That distinction sounds academic until you have stood in both.
Made-to-measure starts from an existing block and adjusts within the limits of what that block can do. A bespoke pattern starts from paper and a person, and can accommodate things a block simply cannot — a genuinely uneven shoulder, a forward-set neck, a chest that is not the shape the industry has agreed chests are.
The three fittings
A commission runs through three fittings after the first appointment, and each catches a different class of problem:
- A scrap fitting proves the paper pattern in inexpensive fabric before your cloth is cut, so the mistakes happen on material nobody paid for
- A basted fitting arrives loosely stitched in white basting thread, deliberately provisional, so balance and drape and shoulder can all still be moved
- A forward fitting is the last appointment before delivery, by which point we are refining rather than solving
The commission appointment itself runs forty-five minutes and takes a $75 bespoke deposit. Most of that time is conversation rather than measurement — where you actually go, what you already reach for, and what you own that you never touch.
